Developmental Pediatrics is a sub-specialty of general pediatrics that focuses on assessing and treating children and adults with developmental delays and disabilities and chronic conditions affecting physical or emotional development, learning, attention, tics, autistic spectrum disorders or behavior.
These specialists can help families find resources in the community and the schools. Developmental pediatrics is a meld of general pediatrics, development, neurology, psychiatry and advocacy. Developmental pediatricians can serve as a resource to general practitioners and schools on issues of learning and development and provide a biobehavioral approach to improving the lives of their patients and all children in the community. The more complex issues involving learning, behavior and mood are often referred to developmental pediatricians who have more expertise in the area and more time to devote.
