Raise your hand if your grandparents’ hoardish habits were excused by the fact that “They grew up during the Depression, honey. They had to save every piece of string and scrap of cloth.” That was the reason given for why Grandma traveled with enough supplies to outfit a refugee camp, why she cleaned the plane out of all the plastic flatware and extra packs of salt and pepper and peanuts, harvested the soaps from hotel bathrooms, and for several decades rented a storage unit somewhere in far away New Mexico whose contents she reminisced about in dreamy tones. Recently a friend and I were commiserating about having too much junk. Now this is a guy in his late thirties. But he actually said these words: “See, my grandparents lived through the Depression and as a result I have this tendency to hold on to things.” Uh. No. I am so sorry. We may no longer blame the Great Depression for our packrat habits. Maybe our parents could blame their parents, who could in turn blame the Depression. But even our parents don’t get to use that as an excuse for the junk they acquired themselves. Fun Fact: The Great Depression [...]

Optimism and pride filled the 26,000 square foot white tent on Monday morning at the Ninety-ninth Annual Commencement at Reed College. Identified as one of the most academically rigorous colleges in the nation, graduates and guests had much to be proud of. West Coast Event Productions is proud to have been part of the production and design of the prestigious ceremony for the past nine years. With various tents of all dimensions, extensive staging, set design, audio visual necessary for 12k image magnification, and a state of the art sound system necessary to ensure impeccable sound quality for the delivery of speeches that may forever be remembered, the ceremony is a grand production, though WCEP has continuously delivered. Beth Martin, Director of Conference and Events at Reed, described one of the production’s lead, DJ Smith, as a “rock star!” West Coast and Reed College have established a great and efficient relationship over the years, as the majority of WCEP staff assisting with the event have been involved since 2005, when Reed first began trusting WCEP to execute the University’s commencement. Students marched into the ceremony to the sound of bag pipes before receiving an inspiring message from the University president [...]

Photo: EPS The crisis is already here. You can help. The earth’s resources are being depleted, the air’s getting filthier… Research has shown that the Middle East—like Costa Rica, one of today’s more popular vacation destinations—used to be lush with forests. But years and years of ancient civilizations cutting down all their trees left the land exposed to the harsh sun, and it literally baked, turning it into the desert we see today. The Hawaiian Island of Lanai was deforested in the 19th century and its land still hasn’t recovered. Wind erosion poses a constant problem and it’s nearly impossible for vegetation to grow. Compare this with the beautiful islands located just a few miles away… In Costa Rica the logging has already started. Huge areas have been deforested and the soil is turning hard. In the hot climate, without trees, the earth doesn’t stand a chance. What can we do about it? I learned recently that Eco Preservation Society has received the rights to go on to protected land and plant 40,000 baby trees. And they need volunteers to help! This first project, the Scarlet Macaw Conservation program at Ocean Ranch Reserve, is a collaborative partnership with the Costa [...]

It’s not as easy as “ABC, one, two, three” for many low-income students to attend higher education, which is why PCC Portland hosted a Motown themed benefit this past Saturday, May 18th, at the Portland Marriot Hotel. The annual “Evening for Opportunity Gala Benefit” poses an opportunity for guests to bid on silent auction items and enjoy a fabulous evening, while providing low-income students in Oregon with the opportunity to further their education. This Motown gala was particularly special, as the event also honored the University’s retiring President, Preston Pulliams’, for his dedication to the cause, and PCC’s mission. Pulliams’ commitment to helping students achieve their dreams was returned with the selection Motown as the annual gala’s theme, as the president had always dreamed of joining the iconic Motown group, The Temptations! Motown is a popular event theme that emulates the funk and soul music recorded at the Motown label in Detroit in the 1960’s. The 650 guests registered in the lobby among custom lit Motown signs before entering the ballroom to face 650 red stretch covered seats waiting to be filled. WCEP created various custom pieces to capture a groovy vibe for the event, including a Motown designed backdrop bar [...]

If you’ve ever had a party or gathering you probably have had alcohol, vodka in particular, left over. We’re always looking for new and economical ways to help you live a more sustainable lifestyle and that often means repurposing. Repurposing is finding an alternative use for something you already have on hand so that it is once again useful and stays out of a landfill. (photo: Absolut) So far in our sustainable living series we’ve shared with you how to reuse: plastic bags, paper towel rolls, tin foil, old t-shirts, coffee cans, coffee grounds, tennis balls, potatoes, tea bags, ice cube trays, old towels, wine bottles, wine corks, citrus scraps, mascara wands, pop can tabs, baking soda, old pantyhose, plastic bottle lids, mason jars, tissue boxes, bananas and their peels, coffee filters, olive oil, milk jugs, mint tins, shower puffs, lemons, rubber bands, shower caps, silica gel packages, onions, seltzer/soda water, cardboard, bread tags, bread bags, Q-tips/cotton swabs, old bed sheets, safety pins, contact lens cases, plastic cups, maps, chalk, K-cups, nail polish, bobby pins, toothpaste, and old toothbrushes.
This past month, West Coast Event Production’s industrial chic venue, Pure Space, has held two Great Gatsby inspired events, and a third at the Portland Art Museum—undoubtedly motivated by the release of the recent remake of the glamorous romantic tale. Set in the 1920’s, the film emulates an air of the carefree, extravagant party life of the time, and calls for equally extravagant and fabulous décor. Black chandeliers, ostrich plums, and cozy dark corners turned Pure Space into Gatsby’s mansion. Both of the Gatsby events at Pure Space happened to be proms, though according to the Huffington Post, the story has become a trendy wedding theme as well. No matter the occasion there are some must-haves that are nonnegotiable to achieve the Gatsby glam. It seems this time, on the film’s 6th remake, filmmakers got it right, and you can too for your Gatsby-inspired event with these recommendations. A magnificent bar: The roaring twenties are known for having been just that—a roaring good time, and no good Gatsby time is complete without champagne and fabulous cocktails. Needless to say, the bar should be the focal point of the room. Parties and speakeasies during the era were centered around beverage service, [...]

Photo from pinterest Did you know June is Great Outdoors Month? Here’s something I just found on my old blog, written in June, 2009! Things have changed since then. My son is now 12 and for the last few years it’s been nearly impossible to get him inside when the weather is nice. My 2nd grader will be home from school soon. It’s a beautiful day and I am anticipating my daily challenge of getting him outdoors. Up until the last year and a half, he was perfectly content to play outside. Even by himself (he’s our only child). With certain friends, imagination led them to dig, play with trucks, dig some more, play hide and seek or tag. As they’ve gotten older, they’ve gotten bored faster out there, climbing the occasional tree before badgering me every 15 minutes with, “Have we been out here long enough yet?” The good news is they’re not begging to watch TV or play video games. They just want to play in the sea of LEGO that is Ethan’s room. Hold on. The bus just dropped Ethan off. I will try to catch him on video for his reaction to playing outside today… Is [...]

The Smart Grid will trigger many transformations. Chief among them is the change in the relationship that consumers have with electricity. We can transform from consumption roles to prosumption roles – producing electricity as well as consuming it. One of the most prominent enablers for us to engage as prosumers are the buildings we inhabit as work and home spaces. Buildings as prosumers will have profound impacts on the Smart Grid value chain. It is also a harbinger of another transformation – the shift of “power”, so to speak, from being concentrated in the hands of utilities as the sole owners/distributors of electricity, to prosumers on a vastly distributed and decentralized basis. Buildings use 40% of the nation’s energy. From an energy efficiency perspective alone, the National Academy of Sciences noted in a study that the “full deployment of cost-effective energy efficiency technologies in buildings alone could eliminate the need to construct any new electricity-generating plants in the United States” until 2030. But a building functioning as an electricity prosumer goes beyond energy efficiency programs and investments. Energy efficiency is a passive tactic that delivers firm negawatts* through reduced electricity use on a consistent and reliable basis. Automated Demand Response [...]
